One capture engine, two ways to use it.

Shorenet captures what a website actually sent, in a form anyone can check later. Investigators use it in our desktop application. Platforms build it into their own products. Either way, the evidence is the same, and so is the check.

For investigators

Shorenet Trawler

The evidence capture application for Windows. Browse as normal and Trawler records what each website sent, and a recording of the screen alongside it, then seals both so any later change shows. The traffic shows what was online; the recording shows what was displayed.

Build a case, mark exhibits, and produce a report written for court, with the evidence the other side needs to check it themselves.

For: investigators, forensic units, disclosure officers, law firms, insurers and regulators.

For platforms

Shorenet Keel

The capture engine inside Trawler, packaged for software companies that already capture web content for their customers. Keel runs alongside your product, so the captures your users make become evidence anyone can check, without changing how they work.

Your evidence stays in your own storage. We never see what your users captured or where they browsed.

For: open-source investigation, social media investigation, digital evidence management and eDiscovery platforms.

Trawler is built on Keel. A capture made in Trawler and one made through a partner’s platform come from the same engine, produce the same .keel evidence file and pass the same checks.

What makes the evidence checkable

Shorenet Validator

Checks a .keel capture offline, in a browser, with no Shorenet server, account or cooperation. It is built for the people who did not make the capture: the other side’s expert, the court, a reviewer.

It will be free and published under an open licence before live casework. Evaluation participants receive it first.

Shorenet Pilot

The relay that independently witnesses the encrypted traffic a website sent, without being able to read it. With a Pilot, the record of what was online does not rest on the word of whoever made the capture.

We operate the Pilot, and we say so. It is part of Trawler and Keel, not sold separately.

What it does not do

  • It shows what a website sent, not that the content is true. A faithful record of false information is still a record of false information.
  • It does not identify a person. Who wrote a post, or controls an account, remains investigative work.
  • It sets aside what it cannot support. Material it cannot stand behind is never presented as evidence.

The reasoning is published in full in Shorenet Research.

We are opening a small evaluation programme for Trawler, and talking to platform partners about Keel. If your work relies on evidence of what was online, get in touch.
